Opened in 1892 in the mining town of Thurber, Texas. Most of the miners who worked in Thurber were Catholics from Eastern Europe. Therefore, St. Barbara’s Catholic Church was among the most important buildings in town. It originally stood on the northwest end of town, at the foot of Graveyard Hill. The church was moved to nearby Mingus after the mines shut down in the 1930's. It was located on a Mingus lot until 1993 when it was moved back to Thurber. St. Barbara’s Church remains one of the few surviving structures still standing in Thurber.
"You don't make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved." ~ Ansel Adams
