Description
1955 stylized rocket/woman hood ornament from a Superior Cadillac Passenger Ambulance. Hood ornaments (or car mascots as they are called by our European cousins) capture the essence of the large luxurious automobiles of the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. The hoods of opulent motor cars were graced with stylized figures and exotic creations of the early automotive age, that reflected the era's interest in the Art Deco movement. However, as the 1950's waned, hood ornaments began to slowly disappear from the mainstream automobiles of America. Where once every model of car seemed to have one, they now became the sole domain of a few manufacturers such as Rolls-Royce, Mercedes, Jaguar and Cadillac. Today, what few hood ornaments remain, are almost all of the spring-loaded stand-up type. So designed to fold down if you should hit a pedestrian, instead of impaling him.
